What has changed in the past decade is where the wine ends up living inside the home. The old solution was a rack in the garage or a temperature cabinet in the corner of the kitchen. The current one, increasingly, is a purpose-built wine room with glass doors that let the collection do its visual work from outside.
It makes sense in Perth for practical reasons as much as aesthetic ones. Summer ambient temperatures here regularly exceed what wine can tolerate in storage. A proper wine room with active climate control is the only reliable solution for a collection worth keeping. The practical case for frameless glass at this application is equally strong:
- 10mm toughened safety glass provides the structural weight for a frameless door without any surrounding frame. The glass holds itself.
- Toughened glass meets AS/NZS 2208 for safety glazing. In the event of breakage it fractures into small blunt pieces rather than large shards.
- Polished edges on all panels give a finished look at every visible edge.
Grey tint filters UV radiation that passes straight through clear glass. UV exposure causes light-strike in wine, a photochemical reaction that degrades tannins and produces off aromas, and one that can occur in a matter of hours in unprotected bottles.
Grey and amber are the most effective tints for UV filtration in storage applications. The grey tint reduces the UV load entering the room while keeping the glass transparent enough that the collection remains visible. It also reduces the contrast between a lit interior and an ambient living area, which is a practical benefit when the wine room sits off a main living space.
Clear glass is also available for installations where the room has no direct sun exposure and UV is not a concern. Other tint options can be discussed at the quoting stage.
Every installation is specified individually. The hardware decisions like hinge type, handle style, finish, depend on the door weight, the opening configuration, and the room decor. The two finishes we are seeing most in current Perth new builds and renovations are matte black and brushed bronze, both of which work well against grey tinted glass.
